About this tool

About Nil UUID Generator

The nil UUID is the standardized all-zero UUID: 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000. Use this page to copy it in the exact representation required by an API, schema, test or configuration file.

Nil UUID versus a generated UUID

A UUID v4 or UUID v7 is intended to identify a distinct item. A nil UUID is always the same constant, so it represents absence or an empty reference only when the receiving system defines that meaning.

Standard, compact and braced forms

Keep hyphens for the conventional 36-character representation, remove them for a 32-character hexadecimal string, or add braces for software that expects GUID-style notation. Letter case does not change the value.

Safe use in APIs and databases

Do not use a nil UUID as a primary key or unique identifier. Prefer a database null value when the schema supports it, and use the nil value only when the protocol specifically requires an all-zero UUID sentinel.

No randomness or upload

This tool formats a fixed constant locally. For actual unique values, use the UUID v4 Generator, UUID v7 Generator, GUID Generator or ULID Generator.

Frequently asked questions

Nil UUID Generator FAQ

What is a nil UUID?

A nil UUID is the fixed 128-bit UUID value in which every bit is zero: 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000.

Is an empty UUID unique?

No. Every nil UUID is identical, so it must never be used where a unique record identifier is required.

When should I use a nil UUID?

It can represent an explicitly empty reference in a compatible API, test fixture, schema example or legacy system.

Can I copy a nil UUID without hyphens?

Yes. The tool provides standard, compact and braced display options without changing the underlying all-zero value.

Does generating a nil UUID use randomness?

No. The nil UUID is a standardized constant and requires no random data.
