About this tool

About Internal Audio Recorder

Record sound playing in a browser tab without producing a screen video. The zer.ai Internal Audio Recorder keeps only the shared audio track, gives you pause and resume controls, and lets you download the finished recording as MP3, WAV or the browser's original audio format.

Record tab audio without recording video

Browser sharing permission normally asks you to select a tab, window or screen. That selection is required so the browser can safely grant access to its audio, but the resulting zer.ai recording contains audio only. The visible track is used to maintain the authorized sharing session and is never added to the recorded file.

This is useful when you need the sound from a webinar, a browser-based meeting you are permitted to record, your own online presentation, a pronunciation example, a web music project or another source where a screen recording would create an unnecessarily large file.

How to record internal audio in Chrome or Edge

  1. Open the browser tab that will play the audio.
  2. Return to this page and click Choose audio source and record.
  3. In the browser dialog, select the source tab and enable Share tab audio.
  4. Start playback in the source tab. Pause and resume the recorder when needed.
  5. Stop recording, listen to the result and download it in your preferred format.

Chrome and Edge generally provide the most reliable tab-audio capture. Browser and operating-system restrictions determine whether an entire screen or application window can expose system audio. If zer.ai detects no audio track, it stops immediately and explains how to select a compatible source.

MP3, WAV and fast original downloads

Choose MP3 for a smaller file that is easy to share and play. Choose WAV when you want an uncompressed file for editing. Choose Original to download the browser's native recording—usually WebM with Opus audio—without waiting for conversion. MP3 and WAV conversion uses the same local FFmpeg audio engine as the other zer.ai audio tools.

If you are deciding between a working copy and a delivery file, compare MP3 versus WAV for file size, editing and sharing. Exporting an already compressed browser recording as WAV does not recover detail lost during the original capture. Keep the original download before making further edits or conversions.

Edit a browser recording after downloading

Use the Audio Cutter to remove an unwanted section, or the Audio Mixer to place a permitted recording alongside narration and background music. Download the recording first: these tools do not automatically transfer the temporary recording from this page.

Private browser-based audio capture

The recording remains on your device. zer.ai does not upload the shared sound or keep a server copy. The temporary result exists only on the current page, so download it before closing or refreshing the tab. Always make sure you have permission to record and reuse audio from meetings, streams, courses or other protected sources.

Frequently asked questions

Internal Audio Recorder FAQ

Does the internal audio recorder save video?

No. The browser requires a visual source to be selected in its sharing dialog, but zer.ai passes only the shared audio track to the recorder. No video track is written to the downloaded file.

How do I record audio from a browser tab?

Click Choose audio source and record, select the tab that is playing sound, enable Share tab audio in the browser dialog, and confirm sharing. Keep the source tab playing until you stop the recording.

Why is there no audio in my recording?

The selected source did not provide an audio track. For the most reliable result, use a current desktop version of Chrome or Edge, select a browser tab rather than a window, and enable Share tab audio.

Can I pause and resume an internal audio recording?

Yes. Pause and resume controls let you skip unwanted sections without ending the sharing session.

Can I download the recording as MP3 or WAV?

Yes. Choose MP3 or WAV before downloading. Conversion runs locally through the site's audio engine. Choose Original for the quickest download without conversion.

Is the recorded audio uploaded to zer.ai?

No. Recording and conversion take place locally in your browser. Download the result before refreshing or closing the page because the temporary recording is not stored in an account.
