Extract, inspect and repack a ZIP file

This workflow opens a ZIP archive, displays the extracted file list and creates a new ZIP from the reviewed contents. It is useful when you want to confirm filenames and paths before passing an archive to another person or system.

How the ZIP workflow works

  1. Add one supported ZIP file.
  2. Run extraction in the browser.
  3. Review filenames, paths and displayed sizes.
  4. Repack the reviewed files into a new ZIP.
  5. Download the result and open it before deleting the original.

What changes when a ZIP is repacked?

The files themselves are retained, but the new archive can use different compression settings. Archive comments, timestamps or extra fields that are specific to the original ZIP may not be preserved, so this workflow should not replace a forensic or backup tool.

ZIP input only

This fixed workflow accepts ZIP input. Use Archive Extractor or a dedicated format page for RAR, 7Z, TAR or TAR.GZ input. Password-protected ZIP files are not suitable when the browser processor cannot unlock them.

Privacy and safety

Extraction and repacking happen locally for supported archives. Review paths for unexpected nested folders and keep the original archive until every downloaded file has been verified.

Frequently asked questions

Extract & Repack ZIPFAQ

Which archive format is accepted?

This focused workflow accepts ZIP input. Use Archive Extractor for RAR, 7Z or TAR.

Are ZIP contents uploaded?

No. Supported extraction and repacking run locally in the browser.

Does repacking change the files?

File bytes are retained, but ZIP-specific compression settings, comments and extra metadata may change in the new archive.

Can I remove individual files?

The current workflow is designed to review the extracted list and repack the reviewed contents; it is not a full archive editor.

Why might a ZIP fail to open?

Encrypted, damaged or unsupported ZIP features can prevent browser extraction. Try an unencrypted known-good archive.
