About PNG to ICO
Convert a PNG into a real multi-size ICO container instead of merely renaming the extension. This page accepts PNG input directly, renders independent icon frames and packages the selected Windows or favicon sizes into one .ico file in your browser.
Why use PNG as the ICO source?
PNG is a strong source format for application icons because it supports full alpha transparency and lossless image data. Logos, interface symbols and illustrated app marks can keep clean transparent edges instead of being placed on a white square. For the best small-size results, start with a square PNG whose main artwork has some breathing room around it.
If the source is WebP, open WebP to ICO. If the artwork needs a square canvas before icon creation, use the Image Resizer first and return with the prepared PNG.
Choose only the sizes you need
Use the Windows preset for common app and shortcut sizes, Browser favicon for 16, 32 and 48 pixel frames, or Large icons for 64, 128 and 256 pixel frames. The preview cards are the final size controls: click any card to include or exclude it. Each card is rendered at its own actual pixel dimensions, so the 16-pixel result is not merely a label applied to the 256-pixel preview.
You can package several selected frames into one ICO or use a card's download button to create a single-size ICO. Keeping multiple frames is normally preferable for Windows because the operating system can choose the closest match instead of shrinking one large bitmap every time.
Fit, crop and transparent backgrounds
Choose Keep the whole image to preserve the complete PNG and add transparent padding when the source is not square. Choose Fill the icon square when reaching every edge matters more than preserving the full image. If the PNG already has transparency, leave background removal off. The edge-connected removal option is intended for flat unwanted backgrounds, not photographs or gradients.
How to convert PNG to ICO
- Add one or more PNG files.
- Choose the target preset.
- Click the preview cards to select the exact output sizes.
- Choose fit or crop and review every rendered frame.
- Build and download the multi-size ICO, or download one size from its preview card.
Local processing and compatibility
The PNG stays on your device during the normal workflow. The resulting ICO uses PNG-compressed 32-bit frames, which preserve transparency and work in current Windows versions and modern browsers. Very old software that requires bitmap-only ICO data may need a legacy desktop editor, so test the result in its final application before replacing the source asset. For a different image output instead of an icon container, use the PNG Converter.
