About GZIP Compressor
Compress one file into a .gz stream. Use this page when a system expects GZIP-compressed file bytes, such as a text export or log copy, rather than a multi-file archive.
GZIP is not ZIP or TAR.GZ
GZIP compresses the one selected file. It does not create a folder structure or combine several loose files. Create ZIP File is the relevant tool for placing several files in one package.
TAR.GZ is different: TAR first groups file entries, and GZIP then compresses that TAR package. For an existing TAR source, TAR to TAR.GZ follows that format direction. This single-file compressor does not automatically build a TAR archive.
Example: a compressed CSV copy
Selecting report.csv produces a download named report.csv.gz. After decompression, the content is still the original CSV data; no columns are reformatted and no spreadsheet formulas are evaluated by the compression operation.
If you select an existing .tar, this compressor compresses that file's bytes and appends .gz. If you select a JPG, it compresses JPG bytes without recoding the picture.
Steps
- Keep the original and select one file within the 250 MB per-file limit.
- Start GZIP creation using the existing preset.
- Download the .gz output.
- Decompress it in the receiving application and compare the restored bytes.
The page has no password, compression-level or multi-file controls. A GZIP extension does not imply encryption.
Check whether compression helped
Plain text may shrink considerably, but compressed photos, audio, ZIP archives and very small inputs may show little saving or even grow because of overhead. Compare actual file sizes instead of assuming every output must be smaller.
Compression is lossless for the file bytes when processing succeeds, but keep the source until a decompressed result has been checked. The input and output both consume memory, so the size limit is not a promise that every device can finish the maximum file.
Compatible compression runs locally in the browser, while application loading requires network access. To inspect an existing supported compressed package instead, see Archive Extractor.
