About this tool

About ZIP Converter

Start with an existing ZIP and choose a different archive container. This entry is for ZIP to 7Z, TAR or TAR.GZ, not for compressing loose files into a new ZIP.

Choose the destination before processing

Use ZIP to 7Z when the receiver specifically accepts 7Z. Choose ZIP to TAR when a TAR package is required; TAR groups files without adding compression. ZIP to TAR.GZ combines TAR packaging with GZIP compression. Choosing a format does not guarantee a smaller result.

For the opposite task, use Create ZIP File for loose files or 7Z to ZIP for an existing 7Z source.

Conversion steps

  1. Keep the original ZIP and confirm that it can be opened.
  2. Choose a destination using the format controls; a dedicated direction page may open.
  3. Add one compatible ZIP within the 250 MB per-file limit.
  4. Run conversion and review the displayed names and file count.
  5. Download the new archive and open it with the intended receiving application.

The tool decodes the archive and repacks its extracted entries. It does not turn the images or documents inside into other media formats. Renaming .zip to .7z would not perform this operation.

ZIP encryption and compatibility limits

The current .zip path uses a ZIP reader without encrypted-ZIP support. An optional password field is not a promise that this path can decrypt protected ZIP files. Damaged data, unusual compression methods or oversized expanded contents can also fail. It does not repair a ZIP or recover a forgotten password.

Verify paths and archive properties

Repacking does not guarantee preservation of archive comments, empty folders, permissions, links, timestamps or signatures. Check names, paths and representative file contents in the downloaded archive. The on-page list shows up to eight file entries plus a remaining count; it is not a complete folder-tree editor.

Compatible processing runs locally in the browser, while loading the site and modules still needs network access. Retain the source until the destination archive has been checked.

Frequently asked questions

ZIP Converter FAQ

Does ZIP Converter create a ZIP from loose files?

No. This entry starts from an existing ZIP and offers 7Z, TAR or TAR.GZ output. Use Create ZIP File to package loose files, or a reverse conversion page to produce ZIP from another archive.

What happens to documents and pictures inside the ZIP?

The archive is opened and its extracted files are repacked. This does not convert a document format, resize an image or recode audio.

Can I convert a password-protected ZIP?

The current ZIP extraction path does not support encrypted ZIP conversion. The optional password field does not guarantee ZIP decryption; use a compatible trusted utility if required.

Will the new archive preserve everything?

Regular file contents are repacked, but comments, permissions, timestamps, empty directories and other archive-specific properties are not guaranteed to survive. Keep the source.

Can I process several ZIP archives together?

No. The converter accepts one archive at a time, with a 250 MB per-file limit. Expanded contents and repacking can require much more memory.

Are RAR outputs available?

No. The writable archive formats are ZIP, 7Z, TAR and TAR.GZ; this ZIP-input entry excludes ZIP as the destination.
